There are few Broadway musicals as famous as West Side Story. The plot is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet but takes place in New York with youngsters from rival gangs: Tony is part of a white gang and falls in love with Maria, sister of the leader of the Puerto Rican gang. Bernstein’s orchestral suite illustrates a mambo-style competition, cites famous songs like “Somewhere” and “Maria” and presents the final battle between the two gangs. This concert with commentary begins with a celebrated fanfare written to promote the sense of patriotism of the United States and ignores all the walls to end in apotheosis in Mexico, evoking a traditional Cuban dance.
